Milrem Robotics demos waypoint navigation solution
Milrem Robotics has successfully demonstrated waypoint navigation capabilities of the THeMIS unmanned ground vehicle (UGV), the company announced on 19 December.
The autonomous solution allowed THeMIS to drive along a predetermined route without the need for the operator to remotely control the UGV.
This capability can be used for a number of applications, such as using a UGV to provide perimeter security. Here, a UGV equipped with sensors patrols a set area autonomously and detects vehicles or persons advancing on friendly positions. The UGV can also be equipped with different weapon systems to take action against targets. The trigger would be in the hands of a human operator to whom the UGV would send an alert based on collected information.
The waypoint navigation solution was demonstrated as part of a performance at the Estonian Defence Forces firing range near Tapa. During the demo, Milrem Robotics together with FN Herstal also performed live firing tests of the THeMIS equipped with the deFNder Medium remote weapon station.
Kuldar Väärsi, CEO of Milrem Robotics, said: ‘Autonomous systems are a game changer on the battlefield that will significantly enhance the capabilities of military units. This demonstration was only the first example of the autonomous capabilities we are developing. Adding autonomous functions will make our warfare systems more efficient and easily adaptable into armed forces.’
